Vascularising endometrial implantation platforms
Recent advances in endometrial organoid culture have enabled the long-term propagation of hormone-responsive human endometrium. However, whether such systems can used to build a vascularised and perfusable implantation platform to support embryo implantation ex vivo remains an open question. In this project on vascularising endometrial implantation platforms, we aim to address this gap. Building on organoid and tissue engineering technologies, the project will establish vascularised endometrial and stromal systems from human and non-human primates. The ultimate goal is to reconstruct a physiologically relevant uterine environment capable of supporting natural and synthetic embryo implantation ex vivo, enabling functional studies of primate implantation and early placental development.
The Boroviak Lab https://boroviaklab.pdn.cam.ac.uk/ is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to work on the development of vascularised endometrial implantation platforms, with an anticipated start date from 1 March 2026.
A central objective is to integrate bioengineering approaches with advanced organoid culture systems to recreate key physical and biological features of the uterine environment. The successful candidate will apply these platforms to study post-implantation development of human and non-human primate embryo models. Close collaboration with our project partners at the Department of Engineering are essential.
The position requires a PhD in a Biology-related discipline or bioengineering. Essential skills include extensive experience in organoid culture, with a strong emphasis on endometrial organoids, ideally across multiple primate species. A demonstrated background in bioengineering approaches, such as extracellular matrix design, bioprinting or vascularisation strategies, is required. Experience in mammalian embryogenesis, stem cell culture and advanced tissue culture techniques is welcome. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to work independently and collaboratively, and keen to develop innovative experimental platforms at the interface of developmental biology and bioengineering.
