The department of Education, Practice and Society (EPS) has specialists from a wide variety of disciplines including history, sociology and philosophy who undertake research to support education throughout the life course by contributing to economic, social and political debate as well as development in societies, nationally and internationally.

About the role
We are looking for a quantitative social scientist with experience in preparing, modifying and analysing statistical data and an interest in the ways in which education can teach democratic values.
The postholder will be part of a small research team based at UCL and the University of Roehampton and will play a pivotal role in the Education for Democracy project which is being funded by the Leverhulme Trust for 4 years (February 2024 – January 2028).
This is a fixed term full-time post, funded for 23 months from 01/03/2026 – 31/01/2028

About you
The successful candidate will have a PhD degree or be near to completion in a social science. If the degree has not yet been granted, the final accepted version of the thesis should have been submitted to the degree granting university by the time of starting. You will have evidence of scholarship in quantitative social science, with a record of peer-reviewed publications and have excellent analytical skills in a range of advanced quantitative methods (particularly utilising cross-sectional surveys like the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education dataset and the ESS data)
In addition, you will have excellent skills in the creation of datasets and the processing of data using SPSS or other statistical software (i.e. preparing, modifying and linking data) and haver the familiarity with theories and debates regarding the effect of education on democratic values and competences
