Research Fellow in Advanced Integrated THz Photonics

UCL - Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering

Location: London, Hybrid
Salary: £43,981 to £52,586
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 30th January 2026
Closes: 23rd February 2026
Job Ref: B04-07075

About us

The UCL Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering wishes to appoint a high-calibre Research Fellow to work on an EPSRC funded project (PLANET) aiming to develop novel photonics based high resolution, widely tuneable THz spectroscopy instrumentation suitable for atmospheric sensing.

The work will involve understanding of the underpinning physics of THz signal generation to address the bandwidth and power limitations of such systems. The project will also focus on utilising the advances made in photonic and electronic integrated solutions to develop the next generation small foot-print air pollution sensors that can offer accuracy, robustness, and scalability.

About the role

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop expertise in integrated photonic and electronic systems and explore their use in high resolution THz gas spectroscopy systems, and work closely with leading national and international research institutions and industries to deliver the objectives of the project.

The post holder will have full access to world-class research infrastructure, including state-of-the-art equipment and probe stations for characterising advanced THz systems, as well as photonic and high-speed electronic integrated devices and subsystems. They will also have access to a comprehensive suite of simulation tools for the design of advanced photonic and electronic integrated circuits, alongside a range of professional training and career-development programmes available exclusively to UCL staff.

The post is available immediately and funded for 12 months in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available.

About you

Applicants should have a PhD (or about to submit) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) or a closely-related field (Physics, Computer Science, Material Science). Essential requirements include demonstrable experience with THz spectroscopy instrumentation; a strong understanding of the physics of semiconductor devices and photonic subsystems; and the ability to simulate and design photonic integrated circuits and RF PCBs.

Candidates must also have proven expertise in the characterisation of advanced photonic integrated circuits and high-speed electronic devices and subsystems, together with practical experience handling delicate samples. Additional experience includes programming FPGAs to implement PID controllers.

If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B). Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections, once the PhD has been awarded. The salary scale for Research Assistant (Grade 6B), point 25-28 is £39,148 - £41,833 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
