About the role
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the EPSRC‑funded National Edge AI Hub, a major UK initiative bringing together partners from academia, industry and the public sector. You will undertake significant research and development work in AI for time‑critical applications, leading on the design, implementation and evaluation of novel AI algorithms and pipelines for deployment on edge‑computing platforms. You will also develop demonstrators to evidence the research outcomes, work independently on project milestones and contribute to publications, reports and conference presentations.
You will join an active and growing research environment where collaboration is encouraged, and where you will work closely with internal colleagues and external partners. The role involves supporting graduate students, contributing to wider research programmes and assisting in the development of future grant proposals. Engagement with national and international research communities through dissemination and networking is an integral part of the post.
The University is a research leading institution in UK, among the top 30 in the world for the quality of its research and top 200 overall, according to the latest rigorous assessment by Times Higher Education. The research team participating in this project has extensive experience in playing various leading roles in R&D and project management in numerous national and international projects. The team specialises in autonomous systems, bespoke AI solutions, and next-generation networking technologies and services.
About you
You will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and have a strong track record of peer‑reviewed publications. You will bring proven capability in AI research and development, alongside experience in at least one of the following: embedded computing, edge computing, distributed computing or cloud computing. Experience in real‑time applications and in developing research demonstrators is essential.
You will be an effective communicator, able to explain complex ideas clearly, and will be comfortable working both independently and within a team. You will show evidence of ongoing professional development and be keen to extend your research portfolio, with opportunities to contribute to research bids and explore fellowship routes. Experience of working on externally funded projects or supporting grant applications is desirable.
