Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 23rd February 2026

Job Ref: NM48910

A position exists for a Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, to work on projects with Prof. Graham Treece in the Medical Imaging Group (https://mi.eng.cam.ac.uk) and also in collaboration the City University of Hong Kong who are funding this position.

With the continued growth in AI for fully automated detection from medical data, research into novel, problem-focused visualisation has received less attention. Humans are particularly good at seeing subtle details in images, but much medical data is 3D or 4D and this contains more information than can be presented in one image. Despite inheriting visualisation techniques from computer graphics (e.g. surface and volume rendering), most radiology is still based on looking at multiple slices through data, and this is what AI diagnostics are typically trained on.

This project proposes to investigate the careful design of medical visualisation particularly for 4D data in a way that makes it easier to explore the data. It is envisaged that this is equally as important as automated detection; arguably better since it keeps a human in the loop.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Key responsibilities include 1) contributing to research objectives and proposals; 2) presentations and publications; 3) assisting with teaching and supervision; 4) liaising and networking with colleagues and students; 5) planning and organising research.

Successful applicants will hold a PhD in information engineering, biomedical imaging, computer graphics or a related area; have strong technical content in original research publications; good writing and presentation skills; excellent mathematical and programming skills including graphics programming; the ability to work autonomously but also give and receive advice.
