About us

The Division of Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences. We have an outstanding international reputation and a community of over 500 staff and more than 300 PhD students engaged in cutting edge research and collaboration. The UCL Genetics Institute (UGI) is an internationally leading centre for genomics within GEE. UGI focuses on the development and application of computational tools for large genomic datasets to address important questions in biology ranging from the genetic determinants of human disease, the origin and evolution of modern humans, the processes mediating environmental adaptations, the improvement of crop varieties or antibiotic resistance. Collectively we aim to help address major current challenges such as population health disparities, food security or the b iodiversity crisis through the study of genomes.

UCL are now recruiting three key roles, funded through the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) Strategic Research Fund, to lead research in:

The UCLH Strategic Research Fund (SRF) is helping to shape the future of research at UCLH and UCL by investing in new facilities and building research capacity. With £11.9M awarded to UCL through the SRF, we have already launched several exciting projects that bring together clinical and academic expertise to tackle some of the biggest challenges in healthcare.

About the role

We seek to appoint an outstanding academic as a Professor or Associate Professor of Computational Genomics in Health and Disease.

The postholder will lead a world-class research programme at the interface of human genomics, computational biology and evolutionary population genetics to understand the molecular and evolutionary processes that generate diversity that influences health and disease. The candidate will combine experimental and computational approaches in the study of fundamental biological questions. Research areas of particular interest include: 1) The origin and evolution of germline mutations in humans; 2) The genetic bases of disease or health-related phenotypes and their differences among populations; 3) The dynamics of population and evolutionary processes on the fate of genetic variants that shape health and disease. We particularly welcome interdisciplinary approaches that are rooted in theory.

This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Academic Staff. Please visit https://www.ucl.ac.uk/human-resources/policies/2021/jun/conditions-service-academic-staff for more information.

About you

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant area and have an outstanding international reputation in the field of computational genomics and genetics applied to the understanding of the origin, evolution and effects of genetic variation that shapes health and disease. They will have an exceptional research profile with well-funded, world-class research and seminal contributions to our understanding of the molecular and evolutionary processes that generate human diversity together with the fate of such variants in individuals and populations, and their role in disease.
