Salary: £39,424 to £47,779 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 9th March 2026

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Optimisation and Control to join Dr Jack Umenberger’s research group at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford).  The post is funded by UKRI and is fixed-term for 35 months.

The project concerns real-time balancing of energy in the electricity grid, a task essential for grid stability. The goals of the project are twofold. The first goal is to accelerate the solution of the large mixed-integer optimisation problems required to balance energy. The second goal is to develop methods that handle the increasing uncertainty associated with high renewable penetration in a more systematic and effective way. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Developing models (mathematical + software) of existing grid operational practices
  • Systematically exploring different formulations of mixed-integer constraints in grid optimisation problems
  • Developing machine learning models to accelerate mixed-integer solvers
  • Implementing and analysing online optimisation algorithms for real-time grid balancing
  • Liaising with project partners (NESO and University of Strathclyde)

Essential selection criteria:

  • Relevant PhD/DPhil (or be near completion), in engineering, physics, mathematics, or similar, together with relevant experience
  • Strong background in mathematical optimisation (either mixed-integer and/or online optimisation in the TCS sense)
  • Ability to manage own time including academic research and associated activities
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Jack Umenberger (jack.umenberger@eng.ox.ac.uk)
