Are you interested in working in one of the UK’s leading blast and impact research groups?
We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering for someone with a passion for mitigating the effects of explosive loading on structures and their surroundings. In order to mitigate their destructive effects, we seek to develop a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms affecting blast loading and structural response when an explosive is surrounded by media other than air.
The successful candidate will extend our existing experimental modelling strengths to perform excellent research that develops a physically-validated mechanistic model for the energy flow and load transfer from high explosive detonations where the explosive is surrounded by other media. We are looking for an excellent communicator and highly capable researcher in blast mitigation engineering who can design, plan and implement experimental and modelling studies on extreme near-field explosions.
The successful candidate will use computational modelling to support existing blast group projects and perform explosive blast modelling to support the development of new applied research for infrastructure protection. The applicant must be experienced in the development of diagnostics to measure the effect of media on fireball and shock development during high explosive detonations and have the ability to manage a diverse range of experiments, and work well with our collaborating partners. The applicant must hold a PhD, or be near completion, in the field of engineering, physical or mathematical sciences, which includes blast experimental analysis and/or modelling of explosions.
The University of Sheffield is a remarkable place to work. Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Their diverse backgrounds, abilities and beliefs make Sheffield a world-class university.
