About the role

Senior Business Operations Officers for our academic departments are the first point of contact for day-to-day department matters. They work closely with our academic community and play an important role in helping to ensure a positive and supportive experience for academic staff.

The role supports one of our seven academic departments through close liaison with the Head of Department, while also working collaboratively with the wider Business Operations team on faculty-wide administrative activities. It provides administrative support for core operational functions including co-ordinating academic recruitment activities, supporting the management of academic workload allocations, monitoring budgets, procurement and other finance activities, advising on and approving purchasing relating to personal research allowances, organising events and seminars, co-ordinating meetings and taking minutes.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced administrator with strong communication and relationship-building skills who is proactive in problem-solving and committed to continuous improvement and enhancing the staff and student experience. This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills & experience: 

Essential criteria

  • Educated to HNC, A‑Level, NVQ Level 3, HND or equivalent, or able to demonstrate substantial vocational experience in business operations gained through progressive, job‑related responsibilities 
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and confidence in learning new technologies & systems
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a variety of formats and to liaise professionally and sensitively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent numerical and data management skills, including the ability to record, extract, analyse, interpret & present data to support effective, evidence-based decision-making
  • Experience of managing budgets & other operational resources
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively and manage competing demands
  • Ability to work accurately and with resilience when under pressure, meeting deadlines while maintaining strong attention to detail and focus on quality
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach, with the ability to work independently using sound professional judgement, contribute effectively as part of a team and support a culture of continuous improvement 

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in business operations administration in a higher education context 
  • Experience of workload allocation
