South Kensington Campus

About the role:

The post of Research Associate in Large Language Models for Process Automation will contribute to the development of an AI-powered framework for risk assessment and safety in continuous chemical manufacturing. You will work in state of the art large language models and their application to chemical engineering, with a focus on AI model development, multimodal data processing and automated documentation. While the role is primarily computational, you will be expected to engage with core chemical engineering concepts and collaborate closely with industrial partners, including BASF and Siemens.

What you would be doing:

You will develop and implement AI and LLM-based agent frameworks aimed at enhancing safety in chemical process environments. Your role will involve hands-on coding, experimentation and integration of multimodal data sources to support automated risk assessment and decision-making. You will regularly engage with industrial partners to co-design solutions and should feel confident presenting your work to stakeholders and at industry-facing events.

What we are looking for:

  • Strong technical and scientific knowledge in machine learning, preferably with experience in large language models (LLMs).
  • Solid foundations in mathematics and engineering, with experience in algorithm development.
  • Confident coding skills and familiarity with modern coding workflows and best practices.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Comfortable with, or willing to quickly learn, core concepts in chemical processes.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to lead and take ownership of a cutting-edge project applying Large Language Models to engineering challenges.
  • Direct collaboration with industry leaders, including BASF and Siemens.
  • A supportive environment to grow and develop as a scientist, with access to mentoring and training.
  • The possibility and encouragement to explore spin-out or venture opportunities, if you wish to pursue them.
  • Membership in the Optimisation and Machine Learning for Process Systems Engineering group and the Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering — the largest centre of its kind globally.
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £43,863 – £47,223 per annum.
