Department

York Trials Unit (YTU) wishes to appoint a Pre-Trial Manager to contribute to high quality research. This post offers the opportunity to be part of a large and successful multidisciplinary unit, renowned for its methodological expertise and commitment to policy relevant research. York Trials Unit (YTU) is a UKCRC registered trials unit undertaking national and international, scientifically rigorous, trials in a variety of areas whilst having a strong methodological portfolio associated with the conduct and analysis of trials. YTU undertakes trials in a range of subject areas including surgery, mental health, musculoskeletal disorders, education and public health.

We wish to appoint a Pre-Trial Manager with vast experience of trial set-up and coordination and in making grant applications to national peer reviewed funding competitions. You will have extensive knowledge and experience in the design, set-up and delivery of randomised controlled trials. You will have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, a successful track record of securing funding, and of leadership and delivery in the field of applied health research. You will be able to demonstrate research management and leadership skills as well as excellent collaboration with NHS and other research partners. You will also be committed to ensuring your research achieves maximum impact and recognise the importance of patient and public involvement in research.

Role

  • To undertake high-level preparatory work for successfully funded grant applications to ensure robust trial commencement. This will include working with the Chief Investigator and co-applicants to develop a protocol and related trial documentation, ensuring Sponsor review and preparation of regulatory approval applications, prior to handover to designated trial team.
  • To undertake early planning for key rate determining elements of the trials and identifying potential issues.
  • To contribute to the management of trial delivery where required.
  • To contribute to the obtaining of external research funding.
  • To contribute to the public understanding of research and scholarship.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of randomised controlled trials methodologies to engage in high quality research
  • Knowledge of other research methods (e.g. systematic reviews)
  • Knowledge of the procedures involved in research governance and ethics (including regulations for CTiMPs)
  • Knowledge of NHS organisations, services and procedures
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Ability to lead and/or take responsibility for large scale research projects
  • Ability to supervise the work of others, for example in research teams or projects
  • Ability to write up research work for publication and onward dissemination
  • Experience of undertaking independent and collaborative research
  • Evidenced active participation in the planning and advancement of trials
  • Successful management of trials including supervision of the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance to teams
