Job Summary
The University of Birmingham has a successful portfolio of Health Data Science Masters programmes, including courses at the University of Birmingham campuses in Birmingham and in Dubai. We are now extending our portfolio to deliver the MSc Health Data Science programme in collaboration with Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, and are seeking to recruit an Assistant Professor in Health Data Science Education to support teaching across our portfolio, in particular in the area of Epidemiology and Health Informatics.
The Jinan University – University of Birmingham Joint Institute (JBJI), is a joint venture based at the Panyu Campus, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China. The Institute was established in 2016 to deliver undergraduate degrees and is now expanding to deliver three Masters degrees in data science: MSc Bioinformatics, MSc Health Data Science and MSc Statistical Data Science, starting in September 2026. These programmes attract high quality students from across China and are taught in English.
Main Responsibilities
You will be based within the Department of Cancer and Genomic Sciences in the School of Medical Sciences on the main University of Birmingham campus in Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK and travel to Guangzhou for two periods per year to deliver intensively taught modules. We anticipate that each visit will be of approximately one month in duration. Additional shorter visits may be required, for example for orientation or graduation.
You will organise and coordinate key modules and deliver teaching, particularly in the area of Epidemiology and Health Informatics.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in Epidemiology, Public Health, Health Informatics, Medical Statistics, Health Services Research or a closely related discipline, plus expertise within Epidemiology and Health Informatics, including epidemiological study design, population health analysis and the use of collected health data. The candidate must have demonstrable expertise in several of the following areas:
The successful candidate must have the ability and willingness to travel twice per year to China for approximately 1 month per visit.
