Are you motivated to help shape the next generation of battery technologies and clean energy systems?

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Batteries for Industrial Decarbonisation to join Professor Paul Shearing’s research group at the Department of Engineering Science (Begbroke Science Park). The post is funded through an EPSRC Prosperity Partnership and is fixed-term for 30 months.

This role will be part of a new research project ‘Energy Storage for Decarbonisation’, delivered collaboratively by the University of Oxford and Fortescue Zero to develop safer, longer-lasting, and more efficient industrial batteries for vehicles in difficult-to-decarbonise industries.

You will be responsible for carrying out research into cell characterisation and safety by examining the thermal and electrical responses of cells and modules in real world conditions and under accelerated stress test scenarios. Utilising advanced experimental tools, this activity will link closely with the design of BMS and cooling systems to maximise the safety of the developed propulsion system.

You’ll need to hold a relevant PhD/DPhil (or be near completion), along with expertise in battery or materials characterisation, and the ability to communicate your research clearly and effectively to a range of audiences, including industry partners.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Paul Shearing (email: paul.shearing@eng.ox.ac.uk)

For more information about working at the Department, see www.eng.ox.ac.uk/about/work-with-us/

Only online applications received before midday on Monday 20th April 2026 can be considered. You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.
