Are you excited by the challenge of applying your expertise in electronics to advance research and teaching in a leading Chemical Engineering department? As our new Electronics Technician, you join our combined Mechanical and Electronics Workshop providing electronics support to the Department’s teaching and research laboratories.

As Electronics Technician, you will design, construct, maintain, and repair electronic and electromechanical systems to be used in teaching and research. The role includes the development of new instrumentation and experimental set-ups, integrating both custom-built and commercial hardware and software systems. You will also provide practical instruction to students and researchers and support academic and research staff with instrumentation design and control, associated data acquisition and software engineering. The postholder will ensure that all work is carried out in compliance with relevant standards and safety protocols.

In your new role, you will work closely with colleagues in the Mechanical and Electronics Workshop, and communicate professionally with staff, students and suppliers. You will organise your workload effectively to meet teaching and research priorities and be proactive in developing the scope of the service. You will stay abreast of new developments in electronics, data acquisition, and control systems, and apply them in your work.

We are seeking an experienced electronics technician with experience of working with instrumentation and control systems. You will have:

  • A degree, BTEC/HNC, recognised apprenticeship or equivalent experience in electronic engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Experience in the design and fabrication of analogue and digital electronics systems
  • Proven ability to diagnose and repair faults in electronic and electro-mechanical equipment
  • Knowledge of modern laboratory and process instrumentation and control
  • Experience in integrating custom electronics, commercial instrumentation, computer hardware and software
  • Experience in the use of relevant programming or process control environments
  • Proficiency with general IT tools, including spreadsheets, databases, and laboratory information systems
  • Understanding of electrical and laboratory safety regulations
