Lead Infrastructure Engineer

University of Buckingham - IT Services

Location: Buckingham
Salary: £51,700
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 24th April 2026
Closes: 30th April 2026
Job Ref: 317

We are currently in the middle of an exciting period of digital transformation. A new TechnologyOne ERP system is due to launch in March 2027, and a full network refresh using Extreme Networks technology is now underway. These initiatives provide strong foundations for the University’s future use of technology, but they also increase the importance of a skilled, collaborative and forward thinking IT Services team.

To help support this work, we are pleased to offer the opportunity for an Infrastructure Lead to join our IT Services team based at our historic campus in Buckingham.

This role sits within a small but highly visible IT team supporting the University’s core systems and infrastructure. The Infrastructure Lead will take a central role in shaping how infrastructure services are delivered, leading a small team of engineers and helping to raise the consistency, reliability and overall maturity of the environment. An overview of how responsibilities are shared across the infrastructure team, including the areas this role will lead, can be found in the attached responsibilities matrix.

The role combines hands on technical work with leadership and ownership. You will be responsible for setting direction across the infrastructure estate, supporting and developing the team, and ensuring that services are delivered in a structured and sustainable way. This includes oversight of networking, server platforms, endpoint management, and security, alongside acting as a senior escalation point for more complex issues.

You will also take the lead on infrastructure projects, working with colleagues across the University to design and deliver improvements. This will involve balancing day to day operational needs with longer term planning, identifying opportunities to improve how services are managed, and ensuring that changes are introduced in a controlled and effective way.

At present, the University has a real opportunity to further develop how its infrastructure is managed and supported. This role offers the chance to introduce greater consistency across areas such as monitoring, patching, documentation, and service ownership, while helping to build a culture of shared responsibility within the team.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable taking ownership and making decisions, while working closely with others across the University. The role involves balancing technical leadership with communication, relationship building, and a proactive approach to improving how technology supports staff and students.

Whether you are already operating in a lead role or are an experienced infrastructure engineer ready to step into a position with greater responsibility, this role offers the opportunity to make a visible and lasting impact on the University’s technology landscape.

The closing date for applications is 1st May, and it is anticipated that interviews will be held week starting 4th May.

Please note: if successful, any offer is subject to standard checks, including qualifications, eligibility to work in the UK on a permanent basis and DBS (if applicable)
