Pembroke College wishes to appoint a part-time College Lecturer in Politics, from 1 October 2026 to 31 August 2028. This is a fixed-term career development position intended to provide academics with the opportunity to develop their teaching and administrative skills at the same time as pursuing their research.
We welcome applicants with expertise in International Relations. We have an engaged and active Politics community at Pembroke. You will be mentored by senior academics and work alongside a number of college lecturers and researchers in the college.
All of our teaching is in small groups (tutorials of two students and classes of up to six). You will be required to teach the following courses to undergraduate students of PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) and of History and Politics; and to students on their Junior Year Abroad from Universities in the USA, Hong Kong and China, who are studying politics:
For First Year Students: ‘Practice of Politics’ and ‘Introduction to Politics’ as described in the PPE Prelims Handbook
For Second and Third Year Students: ‘International Relations’ (required), and it would be an advantage if applicants were also able to teach ‘Empires, States, and Capital: Historical Foundations of International Relations’, and ‘International Security and Conflict’, as detailed here All politics papers: Politics UG.
You will be required to provide teaching for an average of three hours’ contact time per week during the eight weeks of Oxford’s three terms. You will be expected to set and mark weekly essays, set and mark college exams and participate in undergraduate admissions. You will also take on administrative and pastoral responsibilities, including organising teaching and helping students to adjust to the course in their first term at Oxford.
The salary will be in the range of £8,435-£9,335 per annum depending on experience and qualifications. You will have access to a teaching and research allowance of £656.25 per annum, use of a room for teaching and you will also be able to take some lunches and dinners free of charge in College throughout the year. The salary figures are 2025-26 rates and are subject to an annual uplift.
The terms and conditions of the post, together with its Further Particulars, are available at: https://www.pmb.ox.ac.uk/work-with-us (the University Terms and Conditions referred to on this webpage do not apply to this post).
