Fixed Term - 36 Months

Do you have experience of teaching modern British (19th–20th century) history at undergraduate and postgraduate level? Do you have an emerging record of international excellence in research commensurate with career stage and have experience of producing high quality research outputs in Modern British History? If yes, then this fixed term role for 36 months may be of interest.

The School of Humanities is seeking an enthusiastic and engaging scholar for a fixed term post for 36 months, with experience of teaching modern British (19th–20th century) history at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The ideal candidate will have particular knowledge and expertise of modern British environmental history, with an ability to contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate students in the field of modern (19th–20th century) British history more generally. The successful candidate will be responsible for convening and teaching a core entry-level British history module (HIST4007 ‘The Making of Modern Britain’), plus an optional Honours-level module in British environmental history (HIST6205 ‘Cholera to Climate Change: Environment and Society in Modern Britain’). In addition, they will convene and teach an optional postgraduate module in heritage and public histories (HIST7013 ‘Public Histories’). They will also be expected to show ability and willingness to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations in these fields.

The role is offered on an Education and Research (E&R) contract, appropriate for candidates with a strong research record and trajectory, contributing high quality outputs in the relevant field, and able to enhance the University’s research profile for the subject area.

As a Lecturer in Modern British History you can expect to be involved in:

  • Delivering world-class teaching in Modern British History, especially British environmental history
  • Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations in the broad fields of 19th and 20th-century British history, and public histories and heritage
  • Maintaining an active research profile and produce outputs in the field of 19th–20th century British history, preferably relating to public histories and heritage

What will you bring to the role?

  • Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
  • An emerging record of international excellence in research commensurate with career stage and experience of producing high quality research outputs in Modern British History
  • Experience of undergraduate dissertation supervision in the field of 19th–20th century British history
