Introduction to York St John University

York St John is an ambitious, modern University at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.

As one of the fastest growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. As the University for Social Impact, we are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.

The School
Language and Linguistics is clustered within the School of Education, Language and Psychology, an ambitious and vibrant academic unit.  The school has an established Research Centre for Language and Social Justice which the successful applicant would be expected to contribute to. Engaging the public in the study of linguistics and TESOL is an important part of the Centre's work, and ideas about how this might be achieved, both internationally and locally, are welcome.

The role
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in TESOL and Applied Linguistics.  The successful candidate will join a team of seventeen Languages and Linguistics academics based within the School of Education, Language and Psychology. We offer BA and MA programmes in British Sign Language, Deaf Studies, English Language and Linguistics, Intercultural Communication, Japanese, Korean, Language and Social Justice, and TESOL.  We are looking for someone who can lead our TESOL provision, and as part of that take on the programme leadership role for our flagship English Language and Linguistics, and English Language, Linguistics and TESOL programmes.

Key requirements
The successful candidate will have expertise in teaching areas of both TESOL and Applied Linguistics at Undergraduate level and ideally at Masters level.
It is essential that candidates hold a doctoral level qualification, and are actively engaged in research. Your area of research expertise will include TESOL, and you will be actively engaged in research networks in the TESOL field.
Research interests in Applied Linguistics and social justice issues would be an advantage. The successful candidate will be supported in developing a solid research profile.

Required skills and experience
The ideal candidate will be engaged in TESOL teaching and research, and will have experience of programme/course leadership.  Any experience of externally accredited TESOL programmes and experience of setting up and/or contributing to community language learning initiatives would be an advantage, as would holding a CELTA or DELTA qualification.
