About the role

You will support a mission to develop room-temperature quantum technologies for the benefit of mankind.

On this EPSRC-funded research project, you will work with the groups of Professor Ifor Samuel and Professor Graham Turnbull at the University of St. Andrews along with experts at Rohde & Schwarz and Thomas Keating Ltd to develop hybrid photonic spin-polarized devices based on small organic molecules. These devices will be electrically driven to reach unprecedented levels of low-noise microwave amplification for magnetic field sensing and new types of analytical and diagnostic equipment.

We are seeking an excellent Research Associate or Assistant with experimental experience in radio-frequency & microwave instrumentation, electron-paramagnetic-resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and laser/pump optics to support this mission. The initial contract length will be 24-months.

What you would be doin

During the 24-month project you will be responsible for:

  • Conducting high-quality research using your initiative to solve problems.
  • Evaluating new photoactivated quantum materials using electron spin resonance techniques.
  • Designing and testing new microwave cavities with high quality factors.
  • Preparing project updates at group meetings including with external collaborators.
  • Maintaining project records including an appropriately detailed lab book.
  • Leading the writing of research papers for publication.
  • Delivering oral presentations at national/international conferences and workshops.
  • Coordinating with academic and industrial collaborators.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior researchers in the group.
  • Helping to ensure an equitable, supportive and positive workplace environment.

What we are looking for

  • For Research Associate - A PhD in relevant a physical science such as physics, engineering or chemistry.
  • For Research Assistant – A Masters degree in Physics, Chemistry or a related subject.
  • An ability to work independently and proactively.
  • A strong publication record commensurate with your experience. 
  • Good leadership and communication skills.
  • A collaborative nature and the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to communicate well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively.

Further information

Please note that candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £43,863 - £47,223 per annum.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week).

This role is for a fixed-term contract for 24 months.
