About us

The Vice-Provost (Strategy) team leads the development and delivery of UCL’s institutional strategy and strategic plans, providing insight and data to inform and align institutional decisions, monitor progress against agreed goals, and shape responses to external and internal challenges and opportunities. The team also provides expert strategic planning support to UCL faculties and manages UCL data governance.

The Data & Insight team deliver high-quality data analysis and insight to support strategic, evidence-based decision-making at UCL. We are based within the Office of the Vice-Provost Strategy (OVPS), a wider team of ~20 FTE who:

  • Support UCL to implement the 2022-27 Strategic Plan and deliver its major projects (e.g. UCL East)
  • co-ordinate and support departments through UCL’s annual strategic planning cycles
  • work to implement better data governance and management of our organisational data
  • support institutional strategy/changes programmes

About the role

We are recruiting a Senior Data & Insight Analyst to join our team on a c.12 month maternity cover. This role is offered as a secondment (for internal staff) or as a fixed-term contract for external applicants.

The five Senior Data & Insight Analysts are responsible for delivering the highest quality strategic data and insight to inform UCL decision-makers and stakeholders.

They develop and refine our portfolio of data analytics products, which are mainly data visualisation dashboards for UCL’s Tableau server site, and machine learning products, data science models and data pipelines in our cloud data warehouse.

With a strong focus on delivering insight for our senior colleagues, they work to solve problems and support evidence-based decision-making using data analysis, visualisation, modelling and forecasting.

The senior analysts gain a deep understanding of and work with all UCL’s major data domains. They continually refine our existing portfolio of products and lead on the development of others, in consultation with our customers and in collaboration with the wider Data & Insight strategy and product teams.

About you

You will choose one of two routes according to your skills, experience and chosen career path; either primarily as a dashboard and insight analyst, or primarily as a technical specialist focusing on data modelling and engineering in SQL and Python. You'll be user-focused and have great communication skills.

You'll be a graduate-calibre data professional with experience of managing large, complex datasets and have demonstrable experience developing dashboards with the use of leading visualisation technologies (e.g. Tableau, Power BI). You'll have experience managing complex projects in a large, decentralised organisation and you'll ideally have experience working with relational databases and in associated query languages, for example SQL or Python.

You'll have highly developed analytical skills and techniques, including the development and interpretation of statistics and the ability to interpret complex issues and conclude in simple, engaging and visual ways.

Desirable (but not essential): You'll ideally be proficient in a coding language such as Python or R, and have experience of data modelling and engineering in SQL. Experience in developing statistical, machine learning, and AI models into production is also desirable.
