St Catherine’s College proposes to appoint a 1.5 weighted-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Biology (Plant Sciences). The appointment is renewable subject to a 9-month probationary period.
The Lecturer will be part of a diverse and motivated team of Biology tutors and will be expected to teach one and a half hours a week, averaged over the three terms (twenty-four weeks) of the academic teaching year. The College operates a weighting system whereby hours spent teaching groups larger than one person count for more than one hour. St Catherine’s typically takes 7 Biology students and teaching is expected to be organised in small groups of usually 2-3 students. The post-holder will be responsible for teaching many of the core topics of Biology (Plant Sciences) across the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year topics; these include physiology (including cell biology), ecology, genomics and evolution. In addition, the post-holder will be expected to provide tutorial support in areas of Research Skills modules (Years 1-3) and guidance on research proposal (Year 3) and research project dissertations (Year 4), as relevant to their academic expertise.
As a member of the team of Biology tutors, the post-holder will be expected to play a full role in the running of Biology in the College, including arranging tuition in Biology, participating in the admissions process, setting and marking College examinations, and taking a role in the pastoral care of undergraduates. Informal enquiries about the tutorial teaching requirements may be made to Professor Tommaso Pizzari (email: tommaso.pizzari@biology.ox.ac.uk).
The annual stipend for three terms is currently £4227 and is pensionable. The Lecturer will be a member of the Senior Common Room and will be entitled, free of charge, to two meals per week (one of which may be lunch) during Term and the Admissions Period. Teaching/seminar rooms are available for booking within College.
