Research Technician - Disease Modelling and Phenotypic Screening

MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences

Full time, Fixed term (1 year)

About us

The MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) is a leading institute for discovery science, focused on the fundamental biology that drives health and disease. Based in London and closely linked to Imperial College London, LMS offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with strengths in epigenetics, developmental biology, and quantitative approaches. Our researchers are supported by cutting-edge facilities and a strong commitment to scientific training and career development.

About the role

We have developed new technology for high-throughput behavioural screening and quantitative phenotyping that opens the door to drug screening and disease modelling at scale. To maximise the impact of this technology, we are now making it available to external users as a service. It will give rare disease patient foundations the opportunity to make in vivo disease models and perform drug repurposing screens at a price that is accessible even for small foundations. We will also provide services to natural products, biotech, and agriculture companies interested in early in vivo data including neuroactivity. The successful candidate will maintain worm cultures of wildtype and disease model strains, perform tracking experiments and assist with lab management.

About you

You will be the founding technician in the newly established Nematode Phenotyping Facility headed by Dr André Brown. In addition to training and experience in high-throughput phenotypic screens, this position will provide an outstanding opportunity for an entrepreneurial scientist to establish connections to foundations and companies, learn technical sales and business development, and help grow a technology organisation from the very beginning. You will be expected to hold BSc or equivalent qualification in biological sciences and have experience in basic laboratory procedures including molecular biology.

What we offer

As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer defined benefit pension scheme and excellent holiday entitlement (30 days plus 2.5 privilege days & 8 bank holidays), family friendly policies (6 months full pay maternity & adoption leave), a range of shopping/travel discounts, access to our Employee Assistant Programme Scheme, Health and Wellbeing Support and a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme.  Please follow this link to find out more - Benefits
