The role

We are recruiting for the role of Technician to join our technical service as part of an integrated University-wide technical team. Previous experience of working as a technician in Civil Engineering and Built Environment in an educational setting would be advantageous.

Key responsibilities will include contributing to the day-to-day running and maintenance of the teaching workshops in the main engineering and fabrication workshop, preparation and setting out of equipment for practical teaching, supporting staff and students in the use of specialist resources and shared responsibility for safely clearing away resources at the end of taught sessions. The role will support teaching sessions in labs and classes, including demonstrating methods and techniques to students and ensuring all equipment and instruments are functioning, maintained and calibrated correctly. You will have a role in running the teaching laboratories and maintaining and servicing teaching tools. The setting up of practical experiments for teaching sessions, supporting practical classes, and assisting with student projects are all key aspects of the role.

Successful candidate will ideally have skills and experience in a range of practical and technical skills in civil engineering and built environment courses including materials testing, concrete technology, geotechnics, fluid mechanics, structures, and in the operation of fabrication & workshop machinery including band saw, pillar drill, belt linisher, mill drill, Centre lathe, 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC machine operation to support lab operations within SETEC. Training will be provided as required.

Role will require manual handling of equipment, and the successful candidate should demonstrate willingness to be flexible in duties undertaken, and a commitment to continuing professional development.
