The University and UIS

University Information Services (UIS) provides the digital infrastructure, business information and computing services at the heart of one of the world's top universities. The University of Cambridge has a bold ambition to use digitalisation to transform education and research, and UIS's team of developers, designers, testers, analysts and support staff is leading this exciting work.

The role

University Information Services (UIS) is seeking an experienced IT Senior Engineer for a 1-year fixed-term contract. This role will directly support multiple departments in the School of Physical Sciences (SPS), in consecutive 3 month projects focussed on a one department at a time, in closing specific compliance gaps with the Systems Management Policy (SMP), which is central to the University's cyber security strategy.

The post is a practical, delivery-focused position and will involve collaborating with local IT staff, researchers, and administrators. You will support the rollout of key technologies required to meet some of the compliance expectations of the SMP.

Successful candidates will have hands-on experience working with medium to large Linux server environments, alongside strong communication skills, excellent technical troubleshooting abilities, and a collaborative approach.

The role will be managed by UIS and based out of the Central Support Hub. The work will require the role-holder to be physically present in departments. The successful post holder will report to the Head of Infrastructure Service Development and Planning.

What you will do

As an IT Senior Engineer responsible for specific tasks relating to Linux servers, you will:

  • Assist with the registration of IT assets into the school's central asset register.
  • Assist departments with the deployment of Tanium to all relevant devices in the scope of the SMP
  • Document associated network ranges for devices deployed with Tanium
  • Support the installation of EDR on eligible endpoints
  • Identify any scientific and specialist equipment that may require exemption or alternative compliance approaches
  • Provide guidance to departments on SMP requirements and act as a liaison with UIS specialist teams where needed
  • Secondary responsibilities, as time permits:
    • Supporting local IT teams in closing specific compliance gaps
    • Sharing technical guidance and best practices related to SMP implementation

What you will need

  • Linux Server systems administration.
  • Full stack understanding of how different layers of IT interoperate, from networking up to the application / service level. VMware hypervisor, networking and automation are useful skills to have.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Good communication, organisational and problem-solving skills

The benefits

You can expect to receive:

  • A competitive salary with automatic service-related progression and annual cost-of-living increases
  • A generous annual leave allowance of 41 days per year (including bank holidays)
  • Access to a hybrid pension scheme with attractive employer contributions
  • Access to a range of shopping and travel discounts through the Cambens scheme.
