About the role

UCL CEGE is looking for part-time Associate Lecturers (Teaching) in Structural Design – Industry on the MEng Engineering and Architectural Design (MEAD) programme. The MEAD is a four-year full-time integrated master's that aims to challenge students to develop a critical, independent, experimental and technically rigorous approach to architectural, environmental and structural design and engineering in buildings. Graduates will have the knowledge, understanding and skills to be world leaders in designing and developing resilient buildings that deliver excellence in occupation, performance and low environmental impact.

The programme has a strong focus on design, with over 1/3rd student’s time spent in the design studio, and on practical engineering methods, with extensive use of advanced fabrication facilities and labs where students are encouraged to develop leading-edge engineering knowledge, judgment and intuition.

As an Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Structural Design – Industry, you will:

  • Be involved in setting the design brief and teaching materials, as part of the design tutoring team
  • Deliver skills-based lectures, tutorials and/or seminars
  • Set and mark assignments
  • Attend portfolio reviews and assessment panels
  • Demonstrate and apply strong knowledge of construction materials, structural mechanics, sustainability principles, and other factors influencing architectural and engineering design, including adherence to relevant structural design standards.
  • Contribute to project delivery through an understanding of practical construction challenges and integrated design approaches.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders while managing time and competing priorities to meet project objectives.
  • Promote innovation within the building industry, drawing on professional experience as well as teaching and/or research expertise.

This is a fixed-term role until 31 July 2027. There are 5 positions available at 0.30 FTE (10.95 hours per week) or 1 position at 0.15 FTE (5.47 hours) per week.

About you

To be successful as an Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Structural Design – Industry, you will have good knowledge of a wide range of construction materials, structural mechanics, sustainability and other factors that govern architectural/engineering design, including application of structural design standards.

You will also be knowledgeable in project delivery, practical construction issues, and integrated design, and have excellent communication and time-management skills. A keen interest for innovation in the building industry, professional experience and previous teaching and/or research experience are essential requisites.
