About the role:

The Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London seeks to appoint a Clinical Associate Professor in Spinal Surgery providing an outstanding opportunity to join a world-leading team whose interdisciplinary research ranks it as one of the global premier academic departments of surgery.  Your work is expected to align and support the strategy of the Department of Surgery and Cancer working on surgical innovation and novel advanced therapeutics to functional diseases of the spinal and specifically with a key interest in the treatment of spinal cord injury.

What you would be doing:

You will be expected to establish a programme of research focusing on mechanisms of spinal injury and determine therapeutics to promote axonal regeneration.  This programme would be aligned with the strategies of all three divisions within the Department of Surgery and Cancer.  The post will build collaborations within i) the Cancer Research UK Convergence Science Centre, ii) the Imperial NIHR BRC themes of Surgery and Cancer and Bioengineering, iii) the Department of Neurosciences rehabilitation programms and iiii) Imperial AHSC Brain diseases’ theme.

Teaching and research are considered an integral part of the post. All members of clinical academic staff are expected to be active and highly respected in clinical practice and research, publishing papers in leading journals, attending conferences, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate taught course students, supervising research students and obtaining funding to support their students and research activities.

What we are looking for:

You must hold a

  • Registration on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility within 6 months)
  • Further Higher Degree – MD, PhD or equivalent in a relevant area
  • CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training)
  • Clinical sub-specialty of spinal surgery (through neurosurgery or orthopaedic specialty training)
  • You should hold the membership of the Royal College of Surgeons
  • Evidence of up-to-date CPD

In addition, you will have the following knowledge and experience:

  • An established national reputation and a developing international reputation and expertise in the field of spinal surgery.
  • A significant track record in attracting independent research funding
  • Proven ability to work across disciplines and specialities.
  • Experience of training Undergraduate and Postgraduate students
