Senior Research Fellow (Fixed Term)

We are looking for an experienced researcher with expertise in the generation and analysis of quantitative data to work in the Observatory for Mathematical Education; a collaboration between the School of Education and the School of Mathematical Sciences. The Observatory is generating state-of-the-art, evidence-driven, and policy-relevant research to improve mathematical education, learner outcomes and longer-term benefits for individuals and society. Its remit stretches through primary and secondary maths education, to undergraduate study and postgraduate research in the mathematical sciences. 

The Observatory is exploring how learner pathways and outcomes are impacted by a range of societal, personal, and educational factors, through the generation and analysis of a groundbreaking primary dataset comprising multiple linked surveys as part of the Observatory’s longitudinal cohort studies, and through the analysis of administrative datasets (e.g. the National Pupil Database). It is also undertaking additional evaluation and intervention projects in mathematics education.

You will be able to carry out research of a high standard, and evidence how you will undertake original research of international excellence. It will be key that you prepare your work for publication in leading journals and contribute to its distribution at national and international meetings, as well as contributing to Observatory reports designed to be accessible to policy makers and other stakeholders. You must have expert knowledge of quantitative research methods and statistical techniques, and have (or be eligible to apply for) ONS Accredited Researcher status.

This position is available from 1 October 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter) on a fixed term contract until 17 October 2028. Further funding is expected to extend this role and others to October 2033. Hours of work are full time, though applications of 21¾ hours per week and above will be considered. This is a hybrid role requiring time on the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus to meet with colleagues and to access secure data via the Observatory’s Data Lab.
