Postdoctoral Research Scientist

About the role

The Department of Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics (DPAG) at the University of Oxford is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the Ahmadlou Group.

This role will investigate the neural mechanisms that shape and adapt behavioural strategies in reward-seeking and defensive contexts. The successful candidate will examine how specific neuronal circuits across cortical and subcortical brain regions integrate internal states, external stimuli, experience and competing motivations to guide decision-making and behaviour.

The project will use cutting-edge circuit neuroscience approaches to target, record and manipulate genetically defined neuronal populations and pathways. The post is available from 1 September 2026 for 12 months, with the possibility of extension.

Key responsibilities

• Manage your own research programme and associated activities.
• Develop and apply advanced experimental techniques, including in vivo electrophysiology, two-photon imaging and behavioural paradigms.
• Design experiments, test hypotheses and analyse complex datasets.
• Train animals and perform cranial and non-cranial surgical procedures.
• Contribute to new research initiatives and funding applications.
• Prepare scientific publications, reports and presentations.
• Present findings at lab meetings, conferences and external seminars.
• Collaborate with colleagues within Oxford and partner institutions.
• Provide expertise and guidance on experimental techniques and protocols.

About you

You will:

• Hold, or be close to completing, a PhD/DPhil in Neuroscience.
• Have specialist knowledge of systems and behavioural neuroscience.
• Have significant hands-on experience with in vivo single-unit electrophysiology and/or two-photon calcium imaging in mice.
• Be able to independently design and conduct experiments and analyse data.
• Demonstrate a strong publication record.
• Possess excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Have experience of fostering inclusive and collaborative working environments.
