The UCL e-Motion Laboratory and Advanced Propulsion Laboratory advance the electrification of transportation across marine, ground, underwater and aerospace applications. Bringing together expertise in electric machines, electric drives, power electronics, battery systems, fuel cells, energy management and advanced control technologies, the laboratories work with industry and academic partners to develop next-generation propulsion and energy conversion technologies.
About the role
As Research Fellow in Offshore Charger Development and Vessel Charging Management, you will play a key role in developing next-generation offshore charging technologies for electric maritime vessels.
You will design, develop and experimentally validate offshore vessel connectors, charging cable condition monitoring systems, and intelligent vessel integration and charging management solutions. Working within a multidisciplinary research environment, you will develop mechatronic systems for a laboratory-scale offshore charging demonstrator, undertake experimental testing and performance evaluation, and develop advanced control and optimisation algorithms to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of offshore charging.
You will collaborate with academic and industrial partners, contribute to project delivery and research publications, and help translate innovative engineering research into laboratory-scale demonstration.
About you
You will hold an undergraduate degree, Master's degree and awarded PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Marine Electrification, Control Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
You will have experience developing mechatronics-based laboratory test benches, high-fidelity multiphysics models and simulations, and real-time engineering algorithms. You will also have expertise in marine charging technologies, offshore charging connectors, charging cables, and the integration of electrical and mechatronic systems for vessel charging applications.
You will have strong programming and algorithm development skills, an excellent publication record, effective technical communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment. Experience of working on offshore charging systems is desirable.
What we offer
This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 2 years, based at UCL East Stratford.
The post is available at Grade 7 Spine Point 32 (£46,261 including London Weighting Allowance). This salary will increase from 1 August 2026.
