The Role

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Clinical Research Fellow (MD) in Vascular Surgery to join the Newcastle Vascular Research Group within the School of Medicine, Newcastle University.

You will join a thriving and internationally recognised academic vascular surgery team based at the Freeman Hospital and Newcastle University. The group is led by Mr Sandip Nandhra, NIHR Advanced Fellow and Honorary Consultant Vascular Surgeon, and delivers a portfolio of nationally funded clinical trials and observational studies in vascular disease.

You will contribute to a programme of research investigating acute limb ischaemia (ALI), chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI), peripheral arterial disease and outcomes following lower limb revascularisation. There will be specific elements of this role related to national audit programs and quality improvement initiatives around ALI.

The post offers an excellent opportunity to undertake research towards an MD degree while gaining experience in clinical trials, registry studies and translational vascular research.

You will work alongside an established multidisciplinary team comprising consultant vascular surgeons, clinical trialists, statisticians, research nurses and doctoral researchers. The research programme includes NIHR-funded studies and collaborations with national and international vascular research networks.

The Clinical Research Fellow (MD) in Vascular Surgery will support a programme of research investigating acute and chronic lower limb vascular disease, including acute limb ischaemia, chronic limb-threatening ischaemia, peripheral arterial disease and lower limb revascularisation outcomes.

You will undertake research towards an MD degree whilst supporting the delivery of NIHR-funded clinical trials and observational research studies. The post holder will contribute to participant recruitment and follow-up, clinical data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation and dissemination of research findings.

The role provides an outstanding opportunity to develop expertise in clinical research methodology, trial delivery and academic vascular surgery within a highly supportive research environment.

The post is available for 12 months on a fixed-term basis and is anticipated to commence in October 2026.
