Biology Tutor (Part-Time)

The biology provision supports several core modules, including Life Science and Medical Science modules, which run throughout the academic year across multiple programmes, including the Undergraduate Foundation Programme (UFP) and International Year 2 (IY2). These modules are compulsory components of their respective pathways and are fundamental to the successful delivery of our Life Sciences and Health-related programmes.

ABOUT THE ROLE  
You will have the chance to deliver engaging lessons to students on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway as a Biology Tutor. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of materials and formative and summative assessments across the modules you deliver.
You will be required to make sure all the administrative tasks associated with full-time tutors are completed on time and meet the highest standards.

Student learning experience

  • Ensure the module teams implement the modules to the module and programme specifications, academic calendar and in module deadlines and requirements to ensure the best possible student outcomes and student experience.
  • Assist in producing a set of agreed documentation for each course and module including course outlines, module handbooks, schemes of work and teaching material. Review documentation regularly for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Ensure that all assessments for agreed modules in subject area are prepared in a timely fashion to agreed deadlines and are appropriate, fair, and secure.
  • Support the Head of Subject to ensure all students on agreed modules receive effective assessment feedback.
  • Support with the planning, and leading of standardisation, and moderation meetings.
  • Ensure all moderated papers are scanned and uploaded for External Examiners verification
  • Support Head of Subject in liaising with External Examiners for subject area, providing information to External Examiner as required and responding to recommendations.
  • Act as an Academic Mentor for one or more groups of students.

Quality and standards assurance and enhancement

  • Implement quality assurance procedures at module and teaching session level and contribute to the annual monitoring and review of courses.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of students’ attendance, engagement and performance.
  • Attend and contribute to standardisation, moderation and other quality assurance meetings.

Academic management and personal development

  • Participate in regular meetings with teaching and support staff contributing to the effective overall management of the programme and student life cycle.
  • Participate in the Centre and University governance structure, including attending all compulsory meetings.
  • Maintain and submit accurate and timely records of teaching and other activities.
  • Participate in regular training and development activities and maintain a log of these activities.

ABOUT YOU

  • You will have experience of (or a commitment to) working with international students and have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area
  • A master’s qualification is desirable
  • Relevant Teaching Qualification, such as PGCE
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • Candidates holding a PhD will be particularly welcomed
  • Experience of teaching in the UK Higher or Further education sector and preferably a teaching qualification and experience of working with international students
