The role

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key part in supporting the development of clinical and procedural skills teaching for the undergraduate medical programme at Bristol.  

You will be working with academics, students and professional services staff both technical and administrative, to support the design and delivery of clinical skills teaching to medical students.  

The role involves input into design of effective solutions and training students and staff in using techniques and equipment for clinical and procedural skills relevant to the GMC Outcomes for Graduates. 

You will be joining the large, friendly team delivering the dynamic and interactive medical undergraduate programme at Bristol.

What will you be doing?

You will:

  • Fully support clinical teaching activities
  • Ensure that the space is prepared for teaching and compliant with relevant Health and Safety and other legislative or policy requirements, in cooperation with other members of the Teaching and Development team, supporting laboratory-based learning.
  • Provide guidance and training in relevant techniques and processes. 
  • Work with colleagues to apply expertise in supporting design of stimulating learning solutions.
  • Provide specialist guidance and support to students and staff to enable excellent teaching and learning for undergraduate medical students.
  • Use experience to provide services, guidance, troubleshooting, support and training to students conducting self-directed clinical learning.
  • Supervise and teach students to use equipment and techniques to develop their clinical skills.
  • Support the development of the clinical and procedural skills teaching facilities, including writing standard operating procedures, risk assessments, and training guides.
  • Lead on the purchasing and maintenance of equipment and consumables, liaising with university staff outside the programme, suppliers, and NHS colleagues .
  • Develop and maintain clinical skills practice/ simulation facilities that mirror clinical environments, allowing students to practise and refine essential skills in a safe, supportive setting. Collaborating with academic and clinical staff to design and deliver teaching sessions that align with curriculum objectives and GMC competencies.
  • Ensure the availability and functionality of clinical equipment and resources, critical for hands-on learning and assessment.
  • Innovate in simulation-based education, including the use of task trainers, manikins, and digital technologies to enhance realism and engagement.

This role is not only technical but also educational. It supports the transition from theory to practice, helping students build confidence before encountering real patients. It also fosters a culture of patient safety, as students learn to perform procedures correctly and ethically from the outset.
