About us

The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is one of the largest Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering departments in the UK. The Department is proud to host internationally leading researchers covering a broad range of activities, spread over several sites. Our staff and students have a diverse range of interests and expertise, encompassing many areas of physics, biomedical engineering, medicine, physiology, computer science, and mathematics. Our focus is on excellent academic research to identify new technologies and methods for the diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases. Affiliated with 8 major London hospitals, the Department is a key partner of UCL’s Institute of Healthcare Engineering and the Hawkes Institute, and works closely with other departments from the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, including Mechanical Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science.

We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and are home to over 700 students. These programmes include a range of departmental and cross-faculty modules, incorporating problem and scenario-based learning at all stages. This creates a highly engaging learning environment where students put their theoretical knowledge to practical application. About the role

We are looking for two new Lecturers (Assistant Professors) to lead their own research groups within the department, ideally complementary to existing activities. We seek applicants with a programme of research within biomedical engineering and medical physics disciplines aligned with the interests of the department.

Apart from offering mentorship and support to their own research teams, the new lecturers will contribute to teaching on our BEng/MEng in Biomedical Engineering programmes, act as a personal tutor for students on our taught programmes, supervise student projects and contribute to the effective running of the department. They will be expected to teach one or more disciplines, which may not align directly with their research areas.

About you

You will have an exciting vision for your research group and be able to communicate how this research group could flourish within UCL. You will be, or have the potential to be, an effective and approachable leader, demonstrating mentorship and support for your team. You will have a PhD level degree or equivalent in Engineering, the Physical Sciences, or relevant field, and must have experience in producing independent, original, impactful and rigorous research contributions in your field. You will be familiar with the research funding process and grant writing. You will have experience of supervising BSc, MSc and PhD level students and of delivering university level teaching at either BSc or MSc level, in a relevant topic.
