The Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College London is one of the oldest law schools in England and recognised as one of the best law schools in the world. We are based in the East Wing of Somerset House, a Grade One listed building, on our Strand Campus, a short walk from the Royal Courts of Justice and Inns of Court in the heart of legal London.

About the role

The Dickson Poon School of Law is seeking to appoint a Professor of Law and Vice Dean Education.

The successful candidate will support the Executive Dean by providing academic leadership and strategic direction to the School’s education agenda in line with The School’s strategies and policies. The Vice Dean Education represents the School at College level in educational matters in Education Executive and College Education Committee. 

The Vice Dean Education manages the School’s education offering and chairs the School’s Education Committee. The role holder works closely with The School’s Professional Services lead for education, the Associate Director Education. This post will be on either the Education and Research or Academic Education pathway for a candidate with outstanding teaching expertise and research interests in Law. The successful candidate will receive a teaching allocation reduction and an additional stipend for the duration of their tenure as Vice Dean Education. 

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria 

  • PhD, DPhil JDS or equivalent experience in Law.
  • Excellent teaching skills, and a proven track record of teaching at postgraduate (including PhD) and undergraduate level, including competence with electronic learning platforms and other IT skills.
  • Have an established international reputation in law as demonstrated by outstanding contribution through research publications, and a substantial record of highly cited publications of original research. 
  • Excellent understanding of the higher education landscape and of the regulatory context in which the School and wider university operate.
  • Experience in institutional leadership and track-record of leading and delivering initiatives in improving education provision.
  • A track record of scholarship on education and/or demonstrable national or international profile in education leadership.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, to work on own initiative and as part of a team, and to contribute to the School’s culture of collaboration and mentoring of colleagues in research or education-focused contexts.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 

Desirable criteria

  • Senior or Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, National Teaching Fellowship or equivalent.
  • Experience of successfully taking on senior academic administrative roles.
