Lecturer in Social Work

Background and Context

The subject area of Social Work is part of an interdisciplinary School within the Faculty of Health Sciences. The School of Psychology and Social Work brings together social work, psychology, clinical psychology and CBT therapists delivering a range of degree programmes at undergraduate, apprenticeship and postgraduate levels. The post holder will principally work as part of the social work team engaging in the education and training of social work students. The post holder will be actively involved in curriculum planning and contribute to the supervision, teaching and assessment of social work students at qualifying and post qualifying levels, including practice education. Detailed knowledge of contemporary issues in the social work profession and higher education is essential.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

The duties and responsibilities which are specific to this role include the development, co-ordination and support for practice placement provision.

The post holder will also undertake development, design and delivery of innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst our apprenticeship, undergraduate and postgraduate students and on CPD and practice educator courses.

An ability to reflect on the context and practice of social work is crucial, in addition to developing critically reflective capacities in students and a collaborative learning environment with partner agencies and service users and carers. The post holder will be expected to develop a reputation in teaching and scholarship which impacts upon the education of social work students and the development of the discipline and profession. They will be responsible for engaging in personal and professional development, undertake personal supervision of students and academic support of students across the social work portfolio.

Experience of supporting students within the placement context is essential, the post holder should be a qualified Practice Educator.
