Head of School of Biosciences

University of Surrey - Microbes, Infection & Immunity

Location: Guildford
Salary: Competitive Salary
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 6th October 2026
Closes: 27th October 2026
Job Ref: 047726

The University of Surrey combines pioneering research and research-informed teaching with a commitment to making a positive impact on society and the planet. Our Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences brings together 650 staff and 5,500 students across five Schools, with an ethos of collaboration and team science.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptional Head of School of Biosciences to lead the School through its next phase of growth and distinction. With around 180 academic, technical and professional services staff, the School spans biological and biomedical sciences, food, nutrition and dietetics, infection, sport and exercise science, and related fields. Its teaching and research take a whole-society approach to health and wellbeing.

As a member of the Faculty Executive Board, you will set the School’s direction and lead its undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research provision. You will advance research excellence, educational quality and student experience; support staff and students; and develop partnerships that create opportunities for applied research, knowledge exchange and commercialisation.

The School offers a vibrant research community, specialist facilities and established industry collaborations. Its multi-million-pound laboratories feature industry-standard equipment. In the National Student Survey 2026, the School ranked in the top five across several subject areas. The Graduate Outcomes Survey 2026 found that 94% of biosciences students were in employment or further study 15 months after graduation. The School received an Athena SWAN Gold award in 2023 for its work on gender equality.

You will build relationships with research institutes, NHS and healthcare partners, industry, government and charities, raising the School’s profile and helping its work respond to emerging scientific and societal challenges.

About You

You will have a substantial academic track record in biosciences or a related discipline, with research expertise that complements the School’s strengths. You will bring proven research leadership, experience of strategic change and partnership development, and the standing to inspire colleagues and partners. We are looking for a research-active, collaborative leader who can articulate a compelling vision and foster an inclusive, collegial community. A commitment to research integrity, excellent education, equality, diversity and inclusion, and staff and student wellbeing is essential.

Why Surrey

You will join a welcoming, ambitious university and have the opportunity to shape biosciences education, research and innovation at a pivotal time for the School and Faculty.

This is a permanent professorial academic appointment. Head of School responsibilities are held for an initial five years, subject to renewal. At the end of the tenure, the post holder returns to a standard professorial portfolio, with opportunities for further leadership roles. The role attracts a pensionable responsibility allowance.

We welcome applications from across biosciences and related disciplines. If you are ready to lead a collaborative School with ambitious plans for its future, we would be delighted to hear from you.
