The International Growth Centre (IGC) works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. We are a global research centre with a network of world-leading researchers and in-country teams and initiatives working across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Based at LSE and in partnership with the University of Oxford, Addis Ababa University (AAU) and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), we are majority funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). We work to improve the productivity of people and firms as the key driver of sustainable economic development.
The IGC has embedded Country Economists in its partner countries which currently include Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Jordan, Mozambique, Pakistan, Sierra Leone and Zambia, as well as Flexible Engagement programmes including the Caribbean, Tanzania, Nepal and South Africa.
The IGC is currently seeking a Country Economist or Country Economist Jordan based in Amman.
Country Economists are a key part of the IGC’s in-country presence, working under the leadership of the Country Director and Lead Academic to deliver the country strategy and connect local policy priorities with global research expertise. The role combines policy engagement, analytical work and programme delivery: building strong relationships with government, researchers, development partners and other stakeholders; identifying and supporting policy-relevant research opportunities; producing high-quality policy analysis and written outputs; and helping translate research into policy influence through meetings, events and wider communications. Country Economists also contribute to the effective management, monitoring and evaluation of the country programme, ensuring that activities remain responsive to local priorities and contribute to meaningful policy impact.
Applicants should have strong economics skills, excellent quantitative skills in economic analysis, a sophisticated understanding of economic policy, and hold a post-graduate degree in economics, public policy, or a related discipline. Successful applicants will be dynamic self-starters with excellent written and oral communication skills. They will also demonstrate a team-oriented, respectful and collaborative approach to working with others. Fluency in Arabic is required.
