Job Outline:
Birmingham Newman University is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Application Developer to join our Digital & IT Services team. Reporting to the Application Architect, you will play a key role in developing, maintaining, integrating and supporting the University’s applications and digital services. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically capable developer to work across a varied application estate and contribute to the ongoing improvement, security and reliability of our IT services.
You will be responsible for developing, maintaining and supporting a range of University applications and services, including corporate and education systems, integrations, web applications, databases and development tooling. You will investigate and resolve complex technical issues, provide technical escalations from the IT Support Team, proactively identify potential problems and contribute to preventing service failures. You will also support application and database patching, security improvements, incident and problem management, and the documentation of technical solutions and changes.
The successful candidate will have strong experience in application support, development and implementation, together with demonstrable knowledge in one or more relevant application specialisms. You will have strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to investigate complex issues, identify root causes and develop effective solutions. You will be able to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences and work effectively with colleagues across the University.
You should have practical programming experience, including proficiency in C#, SQL or other application development languages, and experience working with REST APIs. You will have a sound understanding of database concepts and experience of reading and writing SQL. Experience of ITIL practices, application security, authentication and authorisation, project-level development, API design and database administration would be advantageous.
We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, has a customer-focused approach and is able to work collaboratively while also operating independently. You will have the opportunity to contribute to quality improvement, develop team processes and documentation, and share your technical knowledge with colleagues.
The role is campus-based at Birmingham Newman University and requires flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends when required. A basic DBS check will also be required.
