An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Finance Assistant to join the Treasury team within the University’s Finance Office, reporting to the Head of Finance (Treasury).
This is a varied, hands-on role central to how the University manages its cash and investments. You will take ownership of monitoring the University’s interest receivable, which was around £23m in 2024-25. That means reconciling income by bank and investment, keeping the Treasury spreadsheets up to date and making sure everything is correctly recorded in SAP. You will also support the Head of Finance with quarterly management accounts and committee reports, and carry out month-end procedures, including identifying and investigating variances.
You will also play a key part in day-to-day Treasury activity. This includes monitoring the University’s bank accounts, supporting cashflow forecasting, helping with bank account administration and preparing working papers for investments such as Money Market Funds and Short Term Bonds. You will help manage risk by carrying out Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) checks. You will also contribute to external audit files and to returns for external bodies such as the Office for National Statistics.
About You
For further information regarding the skills required for this role, please see the person specification section of the attached job description under 'further information’.
The ideal candidate will hold an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification or be part-qualified CIMA or ACCA (or equivalent). You will have bookkeeping or financial support experience, such as sales or purchase ledger processing. You will be comfortable working with an accounting package in a complex environment, ideally SAP. You will also be highly proficient in Excel and confident using pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, SUMIFs, IF statements and conditional formatting to manipulate data and present financial information.
You will be meticulous, trustworthy and highly organised, able to prioritise a busy workload, meet strict deadlines and maintain a clear audit trail. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will regularly draft emails to explain and resolve queries. Previous Treasury experience would be an advantage but is not essential.
The Finance Office can support progression towards a full accountancy qualification. We welcome applications both from people at the start of their finance career and from those with more experience in the industry.
About the Department
The University Finance Office supports business planning and innovation to maximise the financial resources available to the University and to create the sustainable long-term financial platform needed for future growth. Finance staff across the University are networked as a professional community of expertise. You will be supported to continue your professional development through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training, sector networks and regular Finance Office briefings.
The role is campus based. However, staff can opt to work under the Finance Office’s current hybrid policy, which allows up to 40% of time to be worked remotely (2 days per week for full-time staff, normally Tuesdays and Fridays). This is subject to review and operational requirements.
