The ‘ADVANCE’ (ArmeD SerVices TrAuma RehabilitatioN OutComE) Study is a large, complex and fully funded, prospective cohort study of the long-term medical and psychosocial outcomes of UK Servicemen who were seriously injured in the conflict in Afghanistan. Approximately 600 seriously injured men and an equal number of reference personnel have been recruited and will be followed regularly for at least 20 years. ADVANCE is run jointly by Imperial College London, Kings College London and the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Service (DMRC) at Stanford Hall, Leicestershire. 

We are looking for a committed and inspired Registered Nurse to join the ADVANCE clinical team. This post is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong background in Nursing, who demonstrates a keen interest in clinical research and wants to use their skills to make a difference. You will be responsible, under the supervision of a Band 7 Senior Research Nurse (MoD), for the clinical fieldwork for this important study. 

You will be employed through Imperial College (Department of Bioengineering) but the post is based at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) Stanford Hall in Nottinghamshire where data collection takes place. 

Key duties and responsibilities 

Your main responsibilities will include: 

  • Working as part of a team to support the clinical programme under the guidance of the Senior Research Nurse and the Clinical Operations Lead.
  • Undertaking training and completing assessments in performing clinical investigations including: biometric measurements, venepuncture, audiometry and otoscopy, lung function tests (spirometry and gas transfer tests), DEXA scanning and interpretation and cardiac monitoring tests.
  • Undertaking laboratory skills training and becoming independent in handling, identifying, centrifugation, pipetting, storage, transfer and tracking of biological samples.
  • Reviewing all clinical bloods laboratory results and reporting deviations or concerns to the study PI following guidance within the SoP.
  • Working towards taking on specific responsibilities as assigned e.g. radiology bookings, DEXA training etc.

Essential requirements

Essential requirements for the role include:

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Substantial post-Registration clinical experience
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development and compliance with mandatory training requirements
  • Competence in a range of clinical procedures
  • Excellent attention to detail and record keeping
  • Good organisational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office packages
  • High motivation with a keen interest in research with a military population
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
