Research Associate - Enhanced Oil Recover

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position to work on several project mainly funded by the oil industry. The initial appointment will be for 2 years and the successful candidate will start as soon as possible in the calendar year 2018.

This role will be based in the Centre for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) at the Institute of Petroleum Engineering within the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society at Heriot-Watt University.

The EOR centre is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for its pioneering work on enhancing oil and gas recovery. The centre works closely with several national and international oil and gas companies in areas of gas injection, WAG injection, low salinity water injection. CO2 and carbonated water injection, and heavy oil recovery.

The successful appointee will be expected to undertake the following:

  • Designing, leading and running various experiments under reservoir conditions. The experiments include coreflood experiments involving gas and water injection, micromodel experiments, and fluid/rock physical property measurements under high pressure and high temperature.
  • Responsible for analysing, reporting, and presenting the experimental data and their analysis at our technical meetings with projects’ sponsors. These meetings will be held typically every six months for each project.
  • Mentoring and supervising PhD and MSc students working on the projects.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff, students, researchers and senior investigators in the laboratory as well as the modelling team to progress the objectives of the project.
  • Establish a sound research base in order to pursue individual and collaborative research of high quality, consistent with making a substantial research contribution in line with the departmental objectives of maintaining their world-class research performance.
  • Publish research outcomes in appropriate journals of international standing and to publish and disseminate the results of research and scholarship in other outlets.
  • Attend and present research findings and papers at academic and professional conferences, and to contribute to the external visibility of the department.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Petroleum Engineering or a related area.
