Postdoctoral Research Positions

(E 13 TVöD; 39 hours/week) 

Funding for the postdoctoral positions is available for two years, with possibility of extension for a third year. The positions are available starting September 1, 2019. 

Job Description

The Human Impact of Machines theme uses quantitative and causal inferential methods to investigate how humanity’s relationship with machines -- broadly conceived -- may be affecting the human system. 

We expect that the post-doctoral researchers will conduct research into important topics in this area, in concert with the PI, in a self-driven, creative, and scientifically rigorous manner. 

The successful candidates will have access to the computing and research resources of the Center for Humans and Machines. There are no formal teaching requirements associated with the positions. The project is part of the Center for Humans and Machines (director: Iyad Rahwan) at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (MPIB) in Berlin.

Requirements

We are searching postdocs with a strong interest and established expertise in applied statistics and the quantitative study of humans. The successful applicants are expected to hold a doctoral degree in applied statistics, economics, political science, psychology, sociology or a closely related empirical field. 

The ideal applicant needs to:

  • Possess broad interdisciplinary knowledge of the computer sciences (though they need not have a degree in the discipline).
  • Be an excellent programmer and have expertise in using R and/or Python with application to large stores of data and interaction with database tools such as SQL, MongoDB, etc.
  • Have experience with advanced causal inference tools, including the designing, implementing, and managing of field experiments.
  • Have experience with natural language processing tools as well as techniques from machine learning.
  • Have expertise in the use of Qualtrics software and the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform are appreciated.
  • Have a preference for cross-disciplinary research.
  • Be a markedly independent worker.
  • Have highest fluency in English.
