Newcastle University is looking to appoint a Professor/Reader/Senior Lecturer of Biological Architecture. We seek a world leading scholar with research expertise in Biological Architecture to play a key role in forming a new, highly resourced, Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE).

The Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE) is a joint £8 Million initiative between Newcastle University and Northumbria University. The Hub will involve the recruitment of over 30 new academic staff including architectural designers, bio scientists and engineers, also developing three new facilities including two new Bio Design Labs and a unique Experimental ‘Living’ House we call ‘The OME’. The Hub also includes 14 industrial partners including IBM, P&G, Arup, and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Our vision is to develop biotechnologies to create a new generation of Living Buildings which are responsive to their natural environmentgrown using living engineered materials to reduce inefficient industrial construction processes; which metabolise their own waste, reducing pollution, generate energy and high-value products, and modulate their microbiome to benefit human health and wellbeing.

We are launching a global search for candidates for a range of positions across the Hub who are academically excellent, creative, with a pioneering and collaborative spirit. We are looking for people who will not only help us build the Hub but establish a new field of research.

We seek a candidate for a leading position in the Hub who will commit to building Newcastle’s presence and reputation in this research field.

For an informal conversation regarding the role please contact Dr Martyn Dade-Robertson – Reader in Design Computation at – and/or Professor Adam Sharr - Head of the School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape at
