The Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (‘the Institute’) based in London, United Kingdom is looking to recruit a Research Associate for its European Research Council-funded Digital Humanities project (KITAB). The responsibilities of the role will involve working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and the KITAB team in order to support the team in the effective delivery of the project’s objectives. The Research Associate will be an active and engaged builder of an Arabic corpus now totalling 1.5 bln words. The role is initially offered for the period September 2019 to June 2021, with a possibility for extension subject to availability of funding.

Key Functions of this Role

  • Analyse and report on the contents of the corpus
  • Expand the corpus to address survival bias
  • Prepare the corpus for digital analysis

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute personally to the corpus in all areas and build and manage a team to do the same
  • Become the project lead on training new users for applications and annotation relating to the corpus
  • Report regularly on the corpus’s development – to the PI and project team, and in research write-ups (blogs) and for grant requirements
  • Oversee and report on budget lines relating to the corpus

Required skills, knowledge and experience

  • A PhD or equivalent with expertise in Arabic book history for the period of 700-1500
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills in English with the ability to write formal letters and emails
  • Demonstrated organizational, planning and problem solving skills with the ability to identify, pre-empt and review potential issues arising.
  • Readiness and capacity to work on technical matters.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office packages including MS Word, Excel, MS Outlook, Googledocs, Slack, and Google Calendar.
  • Willingness to learn new skills to support development of the project (such as working on Github).
  • Ability to work with and provide support to multiple stakeholders.
  • Pro-active, detail oriented, skilled at time management with the ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
  • A high level of maturity and the ability to work under pressure and against deadlines without continual supervision.
  • Good team player with ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
