Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work as part of an ERC (European Research Council) funded interdisciplinary team at the University of Oxford. The APPELS project (A Periodic Probe of the Elements for life in the sea) aims to characterise the expanse of the periodic table for novel elements essential for marine phytoplankton and to define how phytoplankton are limited by metal availability in a changing ocean. We are seeking a diversity of skills across the project.

The successful candidate will ideally be highly motivated for interdisciplinary research and will have experience in one or more areas of algal culture, trace metal clean chemistry, proteomics and/or bioinformatics, HPLC, and metalloprotein characterisation. They will manage their own academic research and administrative duties, develop ideas for future research and present research proposals to senior researchers. They will also collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters and act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols.

The successful applicant must hold a PhD/DPhil in chemistry, biology or Earth sciences or relevant discipline together with experience in some or all of algal culture, trace metal clean working and proteomics. They must have sufficient knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes, and they must have excellent communication skills, including writing for publication, presenting research proposals and results.

For further details of the role please see the job description. For informal enquiries about the project, please contact Ros Rickaby on

Applications for this post will close at 12.00 on Friday 27 September 2019. Interviews will take place mid-October.
