Postdoctoral Research Associate in Coda Wave Interferometry

The University of Edinburgh - College of Science and Engineering: Geosciences

Location: Edinburgh
Salary: £33,199 to £39,609 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 21st August 2019
Closes: 20th September 2019
Job Ref: 049082

We seek a postdoctoral research associate with at least a submitted PhD or equivalent experience in coda wave interferometry applied to rock deformation experiments. You will participate in a NERC funded project on ‘Catastrophic Failure: what controls precursory damage localisation in rocks’, led by Ian Main of the School of Geosciences.  In particular you will apply state of the art methods for modelling and inferring elastic properties from coda wave propagation through models of rock samples obtained from high resolution CT images, and use coda wave interferometry to locate the sources and magnitudes of acoustic emission events due to micro-cracking during live deformation experiments carried out in a synchrotron. The results will be used to improve the understanding of the processes leading up to catastrophic failure events, using state of the art methods and laboratory apparatus developed in an earlier project and during the current programme, and ultimately in forecasting dynamic failure in rock samples. You will interact with all project partners to ensure the specific work programme fits the overall project goals. In doing so you will provide a bridge between the high resolution CT imaging of the evolving fracture population and the seismic expression of such damage. The aim is to develop a better understanding of the relevant processes, and to use these in real time to improve forecasts of catastrophic failure in a range of applications, including scaling to problems in the evolution of induced seismicity.

This post is full-time, fixed term from 1st November 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter, for 12 months.

The School aims to ensure equality of opportunity and holds an Athena SWAN Silver award. We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender or ethnic group. Appointment will be based on merit alone.

Salary: £33,199 - £39,609 per annum.

Closing date is 20 September 2019 at 5pm GMT.

Vacancy Ref: 049082.
