Hours: Full Time

The Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy is part of the School of the Physical Sciences, and offers three or four year BA/MSci degree courses, whilst also operating as a large and vigorous research school. Playing a major role in research and teaching in materials science, the growth in our research activities over the past twenty years has been almost exponential, with a current research income of more than £13 million per year. Operating from our new purpose-built home on the University West Cambridge Site, we remain one of the leading centres for the study of materials in the world. We now have an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced and motivated administrator to join the Department's senior management team as a Business and Operations Manager, who will play a key role in our continued growth.

As our Business and Operations Manager, we will look to you to deliver a wide range of administrative functions, whilst working with senior members of the Department to develop and implement strategy in this challenging yet exciting environment. Leading a team of 57 staff within the Department (with the direct management of seven staff), you will be responsible for overseeing the undertaking of all staff-related actions, including supervision, training, development, and appraisals. You and your team will deliver a number of key functions, including HR, general administration, resource management and the support of teaching and research operations. You will also oversee the Department's financial resources, including managing capital and recurrent budgets, effectively monitoring research grant expenditure and income, and supervising the purchase of equipment and consumables.

With previous experience of operational management and strategic planning in a senior role within Higher Education or another complex setting, you will join us with highly developed organisational and prioritisation skills, which will enable you to effectively manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. With significant proven people management experience, you will have the ability to motivate your team to deliver to the best of their ability. You will utilise your communication and interpersonal skills not only to build effective working relationships within your team, but to also develop and maintain effective working networks with appropriate staff (at all levels), national bodies and other University Departments.

If you think you are the right person to ensure that the Department can continue to deliver excellence in teaching and research, we want to hear from you.
