Job Summary

The Research Nurse role involves ongoing research in the field of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease research (COPD) including studies that investigate people at risk of developing or and with existing disease. This post has arisen from combined funding from five commercial companies to undertake a trial to investigate the very early stages of the development of COPD by recruiting a novel cohort of smokers. You will be directly involved in the recruitment, guidance, and monitoring of trial participants and in the collection and documentation of accurate data. You may also be asked to work on new studies, based on your caseload and capacity to take on extra work.  As well as working with clinical investigators, you will also work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary care teams involved in the management of clinical trial patients on studies to which you are assigned.

You should provide a high-quality service to all patients within the studies. They will be driven to meet targets and ensure the studies runs smoothly, they will be able to problem solve, work independently, and have a positive attitude.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will be compassionate and understanding of every participant and their family ensuring a sound ethical base for the research they are participating in.
  • You will advertise for and recruit participants suitable for clinical studies of COPD.
  • You will screen the participants against the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
  • You will obtain clinical histories and samples following enrolment.
  • You will carry out and/or assist with clinical procedures within clinical trials including spirometry, phlebotomy, sputum induction.
  • You will instruct participants recruited to trials on study procedures.
  • You will collect and record clinical data from patients by developing and updating databases.
  • You will ensure systems are in place to store and back up study data appropriately.
  • You will develop strategies to identify participants for clinical studies.
  • You will write standard operation procedures for clinical trial procedures when required.
  • You will ensure that Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is observed and maintained.

Essential requirements

  • You should be a Registered Nurse and hold a nursing qualification with registration at the NMC.
  • You should have background in clinical practice
  • You should have experience in COPD medicine
  • You should have evidence of up-to-date professional development
  • You should have patient centred approach to the delivery of care

Further Information

This is a Part-time (30 hours a week) and Fixed Term post, initially for 6 months but with the expectation of extension - based at the Royal Brompton Campus, London.
