The University of Surrey is an international university with a world-class teaching and research profile and an enterprising spirit. Inventive and forward thinking, our heritage shows a recurring theme of doing things differently – and achieving notable results. For example, we have won four Queen’s Anniversary Prizes and were awarded Gold for our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) submission. As a result of our strategic plan and future vision, the School of Biosciences and Medicine (SBM) in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences is recruiting an exceptional person to the following full-time academic position to continue to add to the successes that the School, Faculty and University have already had:

Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Cardiovascular Biology

This post constitutes an important addition to the Section of Cardiovascular Sciences, in the Department of Biochemical Sciences, one of four departments in the School that is home to 85 academic staff.   In the most recent UK Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), we were ranked eighth out of 94 institutions in the Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy category.

Cardiovascular Biology is a discipline which complements many aspects of research within the School.  The Department of Biochemical Sciences (within SBM) is home to forward-thinking multidisciplinary approaches to various areas of cardiovascular sciences including internationally recognised research in coagulation factors, cardiac fibroblasts and fibrosis, ex vivo models of cardiovascular physiology/pathology, tissue engineering for regenerative medicine applications and physiology and pathophysiology of ageing. We host state of the art facilities for molecular, tissue culture and electrophysiology investigations. We are now seeking new talent to complement our existing strengths and bring their own expertise and excellence to help deliver future research success. This new post is designed to enable a high potential early career academic to take the next step in their research career, supported with a start-up fund to resource a PhD studentship and support your onward success.

You will demonstrate success at Surrey through external funding, high quality publications and impact, contributing to the teaching of aspects of physiology and related subjects, such as biochemistry and molecular biology along with supervision of doctoral level research.  Successful applicants will have a PhD in a relevant subject, bring a record of achievement in research and be capable of forging appropriate networks locally, nationally and internationally.

In return, we offer an energetic and forward-thinking working environment with access to a variety of staff development opportunities.  You will also receive a competitive salary and a generous annual leave entitlement, USS pension scheme, tax free relocation package and discounted membership to the Surrey Sports Park.  The University is easily accessible by road and rail and is a short distance from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor John McVey, Head of the Section of Cardiovascular Biology, by email (j.mcvey@surrey.ac.uk).
