Job Description

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced and talented Research Engineer who will be working in a leading laboratory focussing on robotics for fusion and decommissioning to contribute to developing the research engineering capability of the organisation.

What will you be responsible for?

Reporting to the Robotics Group Leader, the Research Engineer will deliver world-class research showing excellent team working and will provide expertise and leadership for research and technology projects. You will be responsible for:

- Acting as an expert consultant in one or more technical or domain specialisms, advising projects, designing solutions in complex situations, and developing skills in others, by shaping processes and mentoring colleagues to set high standards in quality, culture, and practices

- Leading and initiating external contracts or collaborations (partners in industry and universities), forming and maintaining a professional network.

- Managing projects and other activities (including supervising the work of others) to ensure the aims are achieved with appropriate quality standards, timescales and costs and partners are kept informed

- Providing research advice and help to colleagues in radiation hard systems and robotics

- Leading mid-sized research projects or work packages of large projects and/or managing a portfolio of smaller projects and tasks and prioritising/allocating work for a team

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

- Degree in a scientific, engineering or technical subject, or equivalent knowledge and experience

- Postgraduate research degree or equivalent experience.

- Expertise in research and development of systems that are tolerant to gamma radiation including electronics and other aspects

- Ability to communicate effectively, collaborate and influence people with various roles and backgrounds

- Extensive experience of supervising and mentoring others in a research project context

- Established publication record

- Appetite and ability to research and learn about new technologies and domains and to judge how to apply and share this knowledge
